Demonoid: There’s Still Hope, But We’re Not Coming Back Soon

A few days ago Demonoid showed the first signs of life in weeks when the domain’s nameservers were updated. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that the site is preparing to make a comeback. The site’s tech admin informs TorrentFreak that the Demonoid crew is “not looking into putting the site back up at the moment.” However, the troubled BitTorrent site is not giving up entirely just yet.
demonoidAfter the popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid suffered a DDoS and hacker attack last month, the site’s servers in Ukraine were pulled offline.
Local authorities explained that Interpol asked them to take action as part of an investigation into the site’s alleged owners in Mexico.
In the weeks that followed the Demonoid team remained silent. All this time the site itself showed absolutely no sign of life. However, a few days ago something changed.
All of a sudden Demonoid.me’s nameservers switched from demonoid.com to demonoid.me. Could it be that the site was preparing to make a comeback?
We decided to ask the tech admin of the site, who hadn’t responded to our inquiries for a few weeks. This time he was quick to reply, explaining that the DNS change was made to fix issues with the mail server.
“The DNS change was so the mail started working again,” Demonoid’s tech admin told TorrentFreak.
When we asked the admin to shed a light on the future of the popular BitTorrent site we were told that there is “nothing interesting to report yet.”
“I hope there will be one day, but it might not be soon,” the tech admin added.
Demonoid will remain down for the time being and there are no plans to bring it back anytime soon. “We are down, and we’re not looking into putting the site back up at the moment,” the admin said.
In other words, Demonoid might return at some point in the future, but it’s more likely that this will take months, rather than days.
In many ways the current situation is reminiscent of the downtime Demonoid suffered half a decade ago. During the summer of 2007 the site shut down its servers after receiving legal threats from the CRIA. After being offline for six months the site eventually reappeared in full glory early 2008.
Time will tell whether Demonoid can make a comeback once again.

Samsung producing first 2GB LPDDR3 RAM for next-gen mobile devices

Samsung producing first 2GB LPDDR3 RAM for next-gen mobile devices
The little chips that could
Samsung is ushering in the next generation of mobile memory with the mass production of the first-ever 2GB LPDDR3 RAM.
The new mobile chips run at a total of 12.8 gigabytes per second and 1600 Mbps per pin. That translates to the 2GB LPDDR3 being approximately 50 percent faster than a single LPDDR2 chip.
Practically, this higher data transfer rate allows the chip to support high-resolution 3D graphics and full HD video playback on screens larger than the standard 4 inches. Tablets and extra large smartphones are what Samsung is going after here.
The 30nm class 2GB LPDDR3 RAM is the first such chip available in one space-saving package, according to Samsung, which held its Mobile Solution Forum in Taiwan today.

Samsung doubles its LPDDR2 RAM in 10 months

Besting Moore's law, Samsung took just 10 months to double the speed of the LPDDR2, which went into mass production in October 2011.
In that time, Samsung was able to put its LPDDR2 RAM into several devices including the Motorola Droid 4 and iPad 3. Although Apple hasn't officially confirmed the RAM specs for the iPhone 5, the forthcoming phone is also expected to use 1GB of LPDDR2.
Devices packing next-generation LPDDR3 chips are expected to hit the market in 2013.
"[Samsung is] helping to accelerate growth of the mobile memory market," said Samsung Executive VP of Memory Sales & Marketing Wanhoon Hong. "With this rapid introduction of 2GB LPDDR3, we are moving very assertively to expand our global leadership on the premium side of our extensive memory portfolio."
This dominance is no doubt aided by the fact that Apple relied on Samsung for manufacturing so many iOS device components, from RAM, to displays to CPU chips. Considering the stellar iPhone 5 sales, that "global leadership" isn't about to stop, even in the face of the Samsung vs. Apple lawsuit outcome.

Facebook further embraces mobile with updated Pages Manager, off-site ads

Facebook further embraces mobile with updated Pages Manager, off-site ads
Facebook is preparing a mobile assault
Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg wasn't kidding when he reportedly said "mobile is everything" during the TechCrunch Disrupt conference last week.
The social network on Tuesday announced two new fronts to its mobile ad strategy: a new version of Pages Manager and the beginnings of an off-site ad network.
Pages Manager now allows administrators to promote their pages via an iPhone or iPad app.
For a fee, admins - ostensibly business owners - can choose which posts they'd like to promote directly from their iOS mobile devices.
Small businesses had reportedly been asking for the mobile ad-buying capability for some time.

Seeds of an off-site ad network

The company also announced Tuesday that it has entered a test period for an off-site ad network that puts Facebook ads on non-Facebook mobile apps and web pages.
The ads are similar to ones already found on Facebook, just optimized for other sites and the mobile web.
Zuck's team is currently working with a select number of ad exchanges with existing publisher relationships, according to a published report.
The plan is for those publishers to turn around and sell the Facebook-styled ads to third-party applications and websites.
"Right now we're testing to see how these ads perform, whether people find them relevant. They could be an interesting way to discover new mobile apps and see relevant ads off of Facebook," Facebook told TechCrunch's Josh Constine.
From an advertiser's perspective, they have access - for a price - to all the data Facebook has gathered on its users. That data allows them to get the most bang for their advertising buck.
"With Facebook you have really great targeting," the company said to Constine. "They'll be able to reach people that are more likely to engage with the ads they see."
Developers who place ads on third-party apps and sites that direct users to app download stores like Apple's App Store and Google Play are likely looking forward to the network, as are marketers who can now produce uber-honed ads.
Facebook assured Constine no identifiable data would be shared with advertisers...just accept the possibility highly personalized ads will pop up on your screens when you're not logged into your profile page.

GoDaddy Restores Service After Anonymous Attack

GoDaddy restored service to most customers late Monday following a major outage reportedly carried out by a member of Anonymous, the Internet registrar said.

"Most customer hosted sites back online. We're working out the last few kinks for our site & control centers.
No customer data compromised," GoDaddy tweeted on its official Twitter account at about 8:30 p.m. ET.

A GoDaddy spokesperson COPYtold PCWorld that the outage started at around 1:25 p.m. and that "services for the bulk of affected customers were restored" at 5:43 p.m.
The GoDaddy.com website was loading properly at PCMag's offices in New York at as of 3:30 p.m.

A member of Anonymous who goes by the Twitter handle @AnonymousOwn3r and describes himself as the "security leader of #Anonymous," took credit for the attack on the domain registrar, famous for its racy television ads in the United States.

"How long do you guys think i should let http://www.godaddy.com/ under my #tangodown," AnonymousOwn3r wrote. The unknown actor later denied that the GoDaddy takedown was a coordinated effort carried out by Anonymous as a whole. "[T]he attack it's coming only from me," AnonymousOwn3r wrote.
Nor was it clear what AnonymousOwn3r's motive for the attack was, if indeed that person carried it out. The individual's command of English appeared sketchy—one of AnonymousOwn3r's tweets, in which the individual apparently boasted of knocking 52 million sites offline, was written in Portuguese.
The @Anon_Central Twitter feed, however, may have offered a rationale for going after the company, which last year came under fire for not opposing the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), though GoDaddy eventually reversed course on those stances amidst pressure from the Web.

Samsung Sells 20 Million Galaxy S III Units in 100 Days

We already knew that Samsung's flagship Galaxy S III smartphone is uber-popular, but now the phone maker has revealed just how fast the device has been selling.
Samsung on Thursday said it has sold 20 million Galaxy S III units in just over three months. That makes the Galaxy S III Samsung's most successful smartphone to date, generating sales quicker than any of its predecessors.
"The Galaxy S III has enjoyed tremendous attention and popularity since its launch in May, and we are thrilled with its success," JK Shin, president and head of Samsung's IT and mobile communications division, said in a statement. "I would like to express my sincere appreciation to customers who have chosen the Galaxy S III. We will never stop providing the latest smart mobile technologies to help users live a life extraordinary."
Samsung back in July reached its lofty sales goal for the Galaxy S III, shipping 10 million units in less than two months. That translated to about 190,000 Galaxy S III smartphones being sold every day.
It's a bit difficult to compare these sales numbers to other devices, but last year, Apple sold more than four million iPhone 4S smartphones in its first three days; Nokia sold about 4 million Lumia devices during the entire second quarter.
The company late last month introduced the Galaxy S III in several new mineral and gemstone-themed colors that are perfect for fall. The new colors include "amber brown," "garnet red," "sapphire black," and "titanium grey."
The Galaxy S III boasts a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED 1,280-by-720 display, and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It features an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and 1.9-megapixel front-facing one. Earlier this year, Samsung bested Nokia as the top phone maker in the world for the first time in 14 years.
For more, see PCMag's full reviews of the Galaxy S III for Sprint (slideshow below) as well as the Galaxy S III for AT&T, Galaxy S III for Verizon Wireless, and Galaxy S III for T-Mobile.

How to Lock Down Your Facebook Profile

Many millions of people worldwide enjoy connecting with friends and family via Facebook. We get a kick out of sharing baby pictures, funny websites, and our latest adventures. Sometimes, though, we share more than we know, and more than we should. For example, a cyber-creep with access to your profile might be able to answer the security questions associated with your online banking account. Scary!
You know you ought to lock down your profile so that only the right people have access, but Facebook makes it complicated. Here's a step by step guide to protecting your Facebook privacy.
Privacy Settings
To get started, log into Facebook, click the arrow to the right of Home, and choose Privacy Settings. You'll see three choices under Control Your Default Privacy: Public, Friends, and Custom. If yours is set to Public, you're sharing everything with anyone who cares to look. Immediately change it to Friends, so that by default only your friends can see your posts, photos, and so on.

Facebook default privacy

The default settings affect your posts and photos going forward. To correct older too-public posts, you can click Manage Past Post Visibility and click the Limit Old Posts button. Any posts that were visible to everyone or to friends of friends will be changed so only friends can see them.
Facebook: Limit Old Posts

Now edit the settings for How You Connect. Here you'll make choices about who can find you and connect on Facebook. If you're a public figure, or if you use your Facebook account for business, allowing just anyone to find you and send messages or friend requests may be appropriate. For privacy, though, you're better off limiting such contact to friends of friends. It wouldn't be unreasonable to limit most of these settings to people who are already in your friends list.
Facebook: How You Connect

Next, tighten up Timelines and Tagging. There are two settings related to reviewing posts that friends tag you in; turn both of these on. Now you won't be blindsided when a friend tags you in a rowdy party photo; you can reject the tag. Facebook can suggest tags using facial recognition, which is a bit scary. Set it so that nobody receives those suggestions. Configure the remaining three options so that only friends can post on your timeline and view posts on your timeline. You may even want to further restrict posting to specific groups like close friends or family.
Facebook: Timelines and Tagging

Apps, Games, and Websites
Got a relative who constantly bombards you with app invitations? You can put a lid on that activity by clicking the Manage Blocking link. On the resulting page you can block app and event invitations from any of your friends, or block specific apps completely. If necessary you can put annoying friends on the Restricted list. This limits them to viewing posts you've made public, without notifying them of the change. Finally, you can ban all contact with a specific user. Let's hope that doesn't become necessary.
Facebook apps can gather all kinds of information from your profile. If you really value your privacy, you'll want to limit your use of apps to a bare minimum. Click the Edit Settings link next to Apps, Games, and Websites, then click the Edit Settings button next to the list of apps you use. For each app, click Edit and review the permissions that app has. Consider removing any that you don't actively need and use.
You can be the most careful person in the world, but your friends can still expose tons of private information. Below the list of apps there's a section about how people bring your information to apps they use. Click the Edit Settings button to see just how much of your private information they can share. Shocked? Uncheck all the boxes, or all that you don't want your friends sharing for you.
Facebook: How People Bring Your Info

Instant personalization lets participating websites personalize your visit based on information in your Facebook profile. If that sounds creepy to you, make sure this feature is turned off. Here's another creepy one. Facebook may in the future give third party advertisers the option to use your name and picture in their ads, though they don't do so yet. Click the Edit Settings link in the Ads section and click the Edit third party ad settings link on the resulting page. From the drop-down list, select "No one" and click Save Changes.
Facebook; Third Party Ads

Back on the Facebook Ads page, click the Edit social ads setting link. Read the description carefully and decide whether you want to allow this feature. If you don't want your social actions associated with ads that your friends see, set this one to "No one" too. Whew! As you can see, there are a ton of settings involved in locking down your Facebook profile, but it's well worth your while to go through them all. Now you can share your life with your friends, and only your friends.

Photos of two Lumia smartphones leaked

Leaked photos of two new Windows Phone 8 devices from Nokia, the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, hit the Web on Friday ahead of the handset maker's Nokia World event next week in New York.
Two high-resolution photos popped up on the around 7:30 a.m. ET, showcasing bright, slick phones which Nokia is expected to debut next Wednesday.
As The Verge first reported, the leaked photos likely display the "Phi" (Lumia 920) and "Arrow" (Lumia 820) devices (pictured below), both available in a number of colours.
The Lumia 920 phone will supposedly sport a 4.5-inch display, as well as a PureView camera, which has a 41-megapixel sensor and is meant to eliminate the visual noise found on most smartphone cameras. According to VentureBeat, Lumia 920 plans will be sold exclusively by AT&T.
The Lumia 820, comes in at least seven colors, has a 4.3-inch display, and will run on AT&T's and T-Mobile's networks, VentureBeat said.
The mysterious @evleaks has posted only 10 messages in four days, including eight photos of an unknown HTC Android tablet, and already has almost 700 followers in less than a week.
Nokia has a lot riding on its Windows Phone 8 offerings and its tight relationship with Microsoft. The beleaguered Finnish handset maker, once a market leader, has struggled to keep up with competitors like Apple and makers of various Android phones in recent years.
"Nokia bet everything on Windows, and if this doesn't succeed the next step might be having to do what's best for shareholders, and that might include selling off key assets or selling the whole company," Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley said in an interview with Reuters.
Windows Phone 8 isn't expected to drop until Oct. 29, VentureBeat pointed out, so if they are revealed next week, the Lumia handsets will still have to sit on the shelf for almost two months before Nokia starts selling them.
