iPhones might soon exhibit “Assembled in India” tag
Rumor has it that —Foxconn — Apple’s major manufacturing contractor has been given approval to construct a manufacturing unit in India. In accordance with the reports, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, said that government has been negotiating on the set up of such plant in the state.
If this deal finds solid ground than being just a rumor, then it could be a big leap forward for Apple as
it was not allowed to sell iPhones in India on the pre-text of not
having a manufacturing center in the country. With this move Apple can
tap the growth that lies in India and its ever growing mobile consumer
base.
The reports also state that the Indian government will be supporting
such a plant as it will prove to be beneficial for economic growth, and
will also result in an increase of employment. Devendra Fadnavis
is pretty impressed by Foxconn’s existing plant in Henan province that
provides employment to around 3,00,000 workers, so we can assume that
Foxconn might setup a similar in India too.
As of now, there is no confirmation regarding the closure of deal,
although if it turns out to be true, then it might just be used to build
device parts and the final assembling might still be executed in the
China based unit.
