Microsoft starts rolling out an OTA update to enable 4G on Lumias in India

Microsoft has just started rolling out an OTA update for some of its Lumia smartphones in the country which will enable 4G on them. Some of the Lumia devices on sale currently come with support for 4G LTE  but couldn’t make use of the country’s 4G network. This was mainly due to the lack of a software update even though the requisite hardware support for it existed.

The devices that are getting the update are Lumia 1520, Lumia 1320, Lumia 1020, Lumia 930, Lumia 925, Lumia 920, Lumia 830 and Lumia 625. All of these globally support 4G LTE but didn’t do so in India. The smartphones will support FDD-LTE Band 3 (1800 MHz) only because of the hardware limitations that these handsets bring to the table with them.

There will be no support for the TDD-LTE Band 40 (2300 MHz) in these devices. Microsoft had earlier stated that it was planning on launching 4G LTE enabled devices in future in the country and upgrading the software of the previous ones might just be a start of good things to come. Just in case you happen to get the update, do let us know in the comments section.
