6.5 Million LinkedIn Accounts Get Hacked

The world’s largest professional social network has just had a breach. News of the hacking of 6.5 million LinkedIn accounts spread across the web like wildfire recently. The story was broken by a Norwegian IT company who said that all 6.5 million passwords associated with the hacked accounts were posted to a Russian Hacker site.

LinkedIn made an official release via its Twitter account after several users confirmed that their passwords were in fact compromised. The actual number of passwords decrypted is sketchy but many are estimating that at least 300,000 have been exposed so far.  Still, if only 300K passwords have been decrypted it shows on one level that LinkedIn’s encryption system is somewhat solid. They did after all steal over 6.5 million passwords.

News of the breach added to LinkedIn’s security slips as there was already some furore over its Apple iOS meeting app. According to many sources the App leaks important details about meetings and many users were getting concerned about this fact. LinkedIn has over 165 million active users, many of whom are businesses executives and junior-level managers. If the App is indeed leaking meeting notes then it’s a hole that needs to be plugged soon if LinkedIn is to preserve its status among these power users.

Angry Birds Space Hits 100 Million Downloads

Proving that the Angry Birds phenomenon was no gimmick, the latest iteration has been smashing records—much like how things get smashed inside the game itself.

Dubbed ‘Angry Birds Space’, the release has so far been downloaded over 100 million times. This is spectacular considering the release is just over 76 days old. Rovio, the company behind the franchise, took to Twitter to share the goods and help drum up even more downloads. “100 MILLION Angry Birds Space downloads!! SQUAWK if you’re in space!” said the tweet.

From the start Angry Birds Space looked ready to dominate having surpassed the 10 million downloads mark in just 3 days. It then went on to smash the 20 million downloads mark in a week and surpassed the 50 million downloads mark over the next 35 days. Stunning growth by any standards, but what we’ve come to expect from Angry Birds anyway.

The wider titles seem to be doing well too and according to a Rovio spokesperson, all titles have been downloaded more than 1 billion times. Around half of that total occurred within the last 6 months, suggesting of course that there is some momentum behind the company and its offerings.

Google Drove Over 5 Million Miles To Build Street View

Google may have it occasional legal issue over its Google Maps and Street View but that doesn’t mean the whole adventure hasn’t been a good one—even helpful for most of us. The latter spirit seems to have been channelled by Google because the mood around Street View at a recent Google Maps event was somewhat celebratory.

Google revealed at the event that since the Street View cars rolled out, they’ve driven over 5 million unique miles. These 5 million miles have spanned 39 countries and covered over 3,000 cities. This tremendous effort to map and display such a vast area has paid off in many ways. Google Maps now has under its eyes turn-by-turn directions in over 187 countries and a whopping 26 million miles of driving directions completely mapped out.

Another part of the Google mapping machine is of course Google Earth and the company announced also that this part of the business was seeing over 1 billion monthly users.

Of course all of this is good news for Google and to a great extent the millions of people who rely on Google Maps and Google Earth. It’s not so good news for the companies out there that provide paid services in the space. And as Google found out in France a few months ago, many of these companies are willing to sue.

All these offerings by Google have now taken hold however, and it’s going to be hard for anyone to dislodge the search giant from the space.
